Another Reply from the Minister of Natural Resources

A CREATE member received the following letter from the Minister of Natural Resources, dated May 11, 2010.

The Prime Minister's Office has forwarded to me a copy of your correspondence of April 13, 2010, regarding the Government of Canada's response to the report of the Expert Review Panel on Medical Isotope Production (the Panel), and considerations around a new research reactor.

As you noted, a research reactor serves many missions and, therefore, it touches many stakeholders and several government departments. I assure you that all of the federal departments and agencies implicated by the question of a new research reactor are in ongoing communication.

The issue of a new research reactor is inextricably linked to Atomic Energy of Canada Limited restructuring and the future of the Chalk River site. As you know, consideration of these issues is ongoing. I would like to reiterate that the Government supports the Canadian nuclear program and recognizes its role in maintaining the health and safety of Canadians.

The human and technological capital that has been developed as a result of this program is a valuable national resource. The Government recognizes this important expertise and Canada's leadership in nuclear research and development.
